Our Story

One Man. One Mission. A Whole Lot of Heart.

Broken Strings started with a simple idea: every kid in Iowa deserves a chance to play music. Founder Scott Kirkhart looked around at shrinking school music budgets and kids who wanted to learn but had no instrument to pick up, and decided to do something about it.

The mission is straightforward. One guitar for one student in every one of Iowa's 367 school districts. Not a warehouse full of instruments. Not a foundation with a board and a budget. Just one guitar, one kid, one school at a time.

Since starting Broken Strings, Scott has given away guitars across Iowa, connected with students, parents, and teachers who believe in the power of music, and built a community of people who want to put good into the world. This is what that looks like.

How It Works

How Broken Strings Works

1

You Give

A donation through Venmo goes directly toward purchasing a guitar for a student in need. Every dollar counts.

2

We Find the Right Kid

Scott works directly with teachers and school staff to identify students who would benefit most from receiving an instrument.

3

A Kid Gets a Guitar

The guitar is delivered. The kid gets to play. Music stays alive in one more Iowa school.

“367 Guitars. 367 School Districts. We Got This.”

Scott Kirkhart, Founder
